La t\u00e9cnica CRISPR-Cas9, que permite activar o desactivar genes espec\u00edficos con una precisi\u00f3n sin precedentes, ha abierto posibilidades que hasta hace poco pertenec\u00edan a la ciencia ficci\u00f3n. Y con ellas, tambi\u00e9n preguntas \u00e9ticas que la sociedad debe responder.<\/p>\n<h2>La investigaci\u00f3n autorizada en el Reino Unido<\/h2>\n<p>En 2016, la Autoridad de Fertilizaci\u00f3n Humana y Embriolog\u00eda del Reino Unido (HFEA) autoriz\u00f3 a la investigadora Kathy Niakan, del Francis Crick Institute de Londres, a editar genes de embriones humanos con fines exclusivamente de investigaci\u00f3n. Los embriones utilizados proceden de los descartados en cl\u00ednicas de reproducci\u00f3n asistida y no pueden ser implantados en ning\u00fan \u00fatero.<\/p>\n<p>El objetivo declarado de Niakan era comprender mejor qu\u00e9 genes necesita un embri\u00f3n humano para desarrollarse correctamente durante la primera semana. Los embriones en fase de blastocisto, entre 200 y 300 c\u00e9lulas, representan el momento en que muchos procesos fundamentales de desarrollo se activan o desactivan. Aproximadamente la mitad de las fertilizaciones in vitro no superan esta fase, y entender por qu\u00e9 podr\u00eda mejorar las tasas de \u00e9xito de la FIV.<\/p>\n<h2>La frontera entre investigaci\u00f3n y aplicaci\u00f3n cl\u00ednica<\/h2>\n<p>La diferencia crucial es que la investigaci\u00f3n autorizada trabaja con embriones que no se van a implantar. Modificar el genoma de un embri\u00f3n que luego va a nacer, transmiti\u00e9ndole esa modificaci\u00f3n a toda su descendencia, es algo fundamentalmente distinto, con implicaciones \u00e9ticas mucho m\u00e1s profundas.<\/p>\n<p>Hugh Whittall, director del Consejo Nuffield de Bio\u00e9tica, se\u00f1al\u00f3 que la investigaci\u00f3n autorizada \u00abpodr\u00eda plantear una serie de cuestiones importantes que deben abordarse\u00bb antes de cualquier aplicaci\u00f3n cl\u00ednica. La comunidad cient\u00edfica internacional, mayoritariamente, aboga por una moratoria sobre la edici\u00f3n germinal con fines reproductivos hasta que los mecanismos de seguridad y el debate \u00e9tico sean suficientemente maduros.<\/p>\n<h2>Qu\u00e9 implica esto para la reproducci\u00f3n asistida actual<\/h2>\n<p>Hoy, la herramienta disponible en cl\u00ednica para evitar la transmisi\u00f3n de enfermedades gen\u00e9ticas en FIV es el diagn\u00f3stico gen\u00e9tico preimplantacional (DGP). El DGP permite analizar los embriones antes de la transferencia y seleccionar aquellos que no sean portadores de una enfermedad concreta, sin modificar su genoma.<\/p>\n<p>En IMFER realizamos DGP para parejas con riesgo de transmitir enfermedades gen\u00e9ticas.
