Las diferencias hormonales entre hombres y mujeres generan respuestas inmunes distintas ante muchas enfermedades, y la gripe es uno de los ejemplos m\u00e1s estudiados. Un equipo de investigadores estadounidenses ha arrojado luz sobre uno de los mecanismos que podr\u00edan explicar por qu\u00e9 las mujeres tienden a tener s\u00edntomas m\u00e1s leves en determinadas infecciones respiratorias.<\/p>\n<h2>El estudio sobre estr\u00f3genos y replicaci\u00f3n viral<\/h2>\n<p>Los investigadores tomaron muestras de c\u00e9lulas del epitelio nasal, las primeras afectadas por el virus de la gripe, tanto de hombres como de mujeres. Al exponer estas c\u00e9lulas a distintos tipos de estr\u00f3genos, observaron que las c\u00e9lulas femeninas expuestas al estr\u00f3geno redujeron significativamente la replicaci\u00f3n viral, hasta 1.000 veces menos que las c\u00e9lulas no expuestas a hormonas. Un efecto que no se observ\u00f3 en las c\u00e9lulas masculinas.<\/p>\n<p>La explicaci\u00f3n apunta a que las hormonas que se unen a los receptores de estr\u00f3geno en la superficie celular ralentizan la actividad celular e impiden que el virus infectante se replique con facilidad. Las c\u00e9lulas masculinas, con muchos menos receptores de estr\u00f3geno en su superficie, no se benefician de ese efecto protector.<\/p>\n<h2>Hormonas y fertilidad: una conexi\u00f3n m\u00e1s amplia<\/h2>\n<p>Este tipo de investigaciones sobre estr\u00f3genos ilustra la importancia que tienen estas hormonas m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la funci\u00f3n reproductiva. Los estr\u00f3genos participan en la regulaci\u00f3n del sistema inmunitario, la salud cardiovascular, la densidad \u00f3sea y el metabolismo.<\/p>\n<p>En el contexto de la reproducci\u00f3n asistida, los niveles de estr\u00f3genos son un par\u00e1metro que monitorizamos cuidadosamente durante los ciclos de estimulaci\u00f3n ov\u00e1rica. Niveles adecuados de estradiol son indicativos de una buena respuesta folicular.<\/p>\n<h2>Implicaciones para el embarazo<\/h2>\n<p>Durante el embarazo, los niveles de estr\u00f3genos aumentan considerablemente. Las mujeres embarazadas presentan una modulaci\u00f3n inmunol\u00f3gica espec\u00edfica que protege al feto de un rechazo inmunol\u00f3gico, aunque tambi\u00e9n puede hacerlas m\u00e1s vulnerables a ciertas infecciones.
